A 48-year-old man, Jeremy McCallum, was recently sentenced to 85 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to ten counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of possession of child pornography.
In 2020, Michigan State Police and the FBI were alerted to potential child sexual abuse and searched the man's home, discovering hard copies and digital files, including Polaroid pictures and cell phone video, of the years-long, horrific sexual abuse of three minor children, including an infant.
Years of litigation followed until the man's guilty plea and sentencing this year.
U.S. Attorney General Dawn N. Ison referred to the case, saying, "This defendant committed monstrous crimes. This prosecution and sentence should send a strong message to child predators: you will suffer severe consequences if you harm our children." Usually child sexual abuse issues are prosecuted by and local authorities, and not by the federal government. And, if a child is sexually abused on federal lands - a military base or Native American territory, the offender may be prosecuted under federal law.
However, in this case, the child pornography and child exploitation charges fell under federal law.
