OpenAI/ChatGPT Targeted In Cyberattack By Chinese Hackers

The popularity of artificial intelligence software, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, brings with it the threat of hackers, especially from hostile foreign actors, targeting the software itself, as recent spear-phishing attacks by Chinese hackers have done to OpenAI employees.

The cybercriminal group sent .zip files to staff of the AI company in a formal email detailing supposed shortcomings in the ChatGPT software.

If the .zip file was downloaded, malware would be installed to swipe data from the computer, for the purposes of "reconnaissance, vulnerability research, anomaly detection evasion" and other tasks.

Fortunately, these attacks were unsuccessful, but everyone should remain skeptical of downloading any files from an unknown source. Kate Irwin "Chinese Hackers Sent OpenAI Staff Malware in Spear-Phishing Attacks" pcmag.com (Oct. 09, 2024).

There are steps you can take to avoid installing malware.

Use unique, strong passwords for each of your online accounts, and change them frequently. Never open an attachment from someone you don't know or unless you are expecting to receive the file or document – and have verified the sender's address.

Don't conduct sensitive or financial transactions when you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network – including making any online purchases.

Avoid clicking on links without verifying that the send meant to send them.

Here are signs your device may have a malware infection:

  • Slowing down or crashing more than normal
  • Displaying frequent error messages
  • Failing to shut down or restart
  • Displaying numerous pop-up messages
  • Opening web pages you did not visit or sending emails you did not write
  • New toolbars or icons showing up unexpectedly
  • Your Internet home page changing suddenly and repeatedly
  • Your laptop battery draining more quickly than normal
  • Windows opening, claiming to scan your computer for viruses and finding an unrealistically large number
  • Black screens opening and closing when you start the computer
  • Emails being returned with virus warnings
  • Icons moving when you try to click on them
